In clan terms, Leitrim is the home
of the O’Rourkes of Breifne. They were the major chieftains and their castles
extended the whole length of the county, from Carrigallen in the extreme
south-east to Dromahair in the north-west, with Leitrim Village, final refuge
of O’Sullivan Beare in 1603, in the middle.
For centuries, until the early 1700s, they were the most powerful family
in Leitrim but they had their sub-chieftains, most notably the Reynolds
and the McClancys....
