Kennelly hints at Kingdom return
Ireland international vice-captain Tadhg Kennelly has hinted that he
may return to his native Kerry at the end of next year, despite signing
a contract with the Sydney Swans that extends to 2009.
Kennelly has never made a secret of his desire to win an All-Ireland senior
medal with the Kingdom. His late father Tim was a star of the great Kerry
team of the 1970s and 1980s, while his brother Noel was a winner in 2000.
“I’ve signed until 2009 but that doesn’t mean that
I’ll be seeing it out. If I wanted to move on I don’t think
the club would stand in my way,” he said.
Meath lose Giles
New Meath manager Colm Coyle has confirmed that Trevor Giles will not
be donning a Royal County jersey in 2007.
There was speculation that the former two times footballer of the year
might rejoin the Meath squad after taking a year out in 2006. The reappearance
of Darren Fay after a similar lay-off had heightened the expectation amongst
Meath fans that Giles might also decide to return to the fold.
“Trevor has retired,” Coyle confirmed. “He has been
an unbelievable servant to Meath football and has to be ranked right up
there with the very best. He certainly owes nobody anything”.
Mayo stalemate
A sensational last-gasp goal by Peadar Gardiner secured a dramatic 2-8
to 1-11 draw for Crossmolina in their Mayo SFC final clash with Ballaghaderreen
at Castlebar.
The champions trailed by three points with five minutes of injury time
having elapsed.
However Ciaran McDonald saw his fiercely struck 30-yard free cheekily
deflected into the net by the alert Gardiner to ensure an eagerly awaited
replay. Crossmolina’s survival was all the more incredible as they
had played with 14 men for the last 15 minutes after sub Henry McLoughlin
was given a straight red card.
Nemos do it again
Cork inter-county star James Masters produced a fine performance as Nemo
Rangers trumped Dohenys by 1-11 to 0-7 to clinch their fifth Cork SFC
title in the last seven years. Masters scored the all-important goal in
the 12th minute but also chipped over six more points for a thrilling
victory.
With the Munster club Champions set to play the winners of the London
club Championship next year GAA supporters in the capital could well be
seeing Masters in action at Ruislip. |
