Saints feel full force of Tir Chonnail Gaels

The IR senior side may have been knocked out of the Championship but in Birmingham on Sunday Tir Chonaill Gaels Under-16s collected their first-ever British title with a comprehensive victory over Yorkshire Champions St. Benedicts.

Although the Leeds lads showed plenty of endeavour from the off the Gaels looked much too strong and raced into an early lead thanks to a fine goal from corner forward Frankie Lynam.

The Benedicts got off the mark thanks to a well-taken free from their only scorer on the day Danny Meriditch.

That was as good as it got for the Leeds youngsters however as wave after wave of Gaels attacks produced points for man-of-the-match Aidan Lynam and the game was over as a contest thanks to goals on the cusp of half-time from James O’Sullivan and Jerome Lawson. The Gaels led by 3-10 to 0-3 at the change of ends though the final result was already a foregone conclusion.

With the Benedicts heads now dropping the Gaels piled on the scores. Corner-backs Ger Geraghty (1-1) and Timmy O’Mahony (0-1) both got on the scoresheet and midfielder John Geraghty netted the goal of the game after a poor kick out from the Leeds keeper.

The future looks bright for Tir Chonaill Gaels on this evidence, while St. Benedicts’ could become a force in Yorkshire in the coming seasons.
