Race for Board top job
London GAA is bracing itself for one of the most lively and contentious
AGMs of recent years with the County Board secretary battling with current
chairman Larry O’Leary for the top job.
Long-serving County Board secretary Tommy Harrell confirmed to the Irish
Post this week that he will be contesting the chairman’s job at
the annual convention on December 10.
In total six people have been nominated for the top job: Brendan O’Brien,
Tommy Harrell, Larry O’Leary, Liam Brennan Tom Coneely and Noel
O’Sullivan.
However several of those candidates will not allow their names to go forward
and it is expected that the current chairman and secretary will be left
to battle it out with O’Leary looking to secure an eighth and final
year in office.
Tommy Harrell has also been nominated for his current position of county
secretary along with Niall Erskine and Tony O’Halloran. If Harrell
were to win the chair and vacate the secretary’s position Tir Chonaill
Gaels clubman Erskine would be the overwhelming favourite to become county
secretary.
Long serving County Board treasurer Iggy Donnelly is expected to be returned
unopposed, as is PRO Micheal Rice.
This year’s county convention is expected to be divisive after a
year in which the board has been gripped by financial chaos. Clubs have
been in open revolt against the executive and the divisons at the heart
of the GAA’s governing body in Britain have become more obvious.
