| Dark Nights for Kirwan THE
airwaves of Sirius Satellite Radio are a bit blacker lately. Black 47
leader Larry Kirwan is now working the night shift on the Sirius Disorder
channel.
You can hear him on Monday through Thursday nights from 8 p.m.- midnight.
Kirwan hosts the only Celtic show currently on air in the satellite radio
format. Celtic Crush remains the same time also on the Disorder channel,
which is Saturdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
“Celtic Crush is chosen from music that I’m bringing in
with me and all of it has at least some reference to Celtic music although
my idea of Celtica is very broad,” he explains.
“With the night shift shows, I’m delving into the whole
Sirius database and employing some of the same ideas as I use with Celtic
Crush analysis of the music from a musician’s point of view, my
knowledge of and friendship with some of the players, remembrance of specific
shows that I’ve seen through the years and a genuine curiosity about
music and the people who make it happen.”
Celtic Crush continues to be a phenomenon for Sirius, generating a buzz
on many Celtic media forms. People are responding well to the eclectic
mix of Briton harp, Thin Lizzy and the Waterboys, with everything in between.
“The reaction to Celtic Crush has been great, possibly because I
make the show as personal as possible,” he says.
“Basically, when programming the show, I’m also thinking ahead
about what I’m going to say, going after specific memories and interest
points and then allowing them to drag other memories to the surface in
the days before the show.”
You can check out Black 47 on April 21 as they visit Connolly’s
for one more time before they trot around the country on the summer festival
circuit.
They will be road testing new songs for an album they plan on recording
later this summer, and will be bringing DJ Six Pints in to spin reggae
and ska! For more information, check out www.black 47.com.
