12 FRIDAY

The Life and Legacy of Robert Emmet at AIHS

THE year 2003 marks the bicentenary of the death of Robert Emmet, one of the most popular and important Irish revolutionaries. A product of his extraordinary times, he was consequently close to the heart of Irish radicalism when still in his adolescence. His progression into revolutionary politics in adulthood was not inevitable but, nonetheless, a natural, explicable and consistent step for someone of his background.

A new book Remember Emmet: Images of the Life and Legacy of Robert Emmet charts this progression from his earliest years, to his time as a student activist in 1798, through his graduation to full blown revolutionary leader in 1803, his subsequent trial and execution and, finally, to the enduring legacy that has lasted for the last two hundred years. Ruán O’Donnell, Ireland’s leading authority on Robert Emmet, and the author of a definitive two-volume biography will discuss this latest book at the American Irish Historical Society, 991 Fifth Avenue at 80th Street, Manhattan. At 6:30 p.m. Call ahead at 212-288-2263. O’Donnell’s book is illustrated with 300 documents and illustrations culled mainly from the National Library, the National Gallery, the National Archives, Kilmainham Gaol and the National Museum, as well as other sources in Ireland and America, including American Irish Historical Society. Many of these have never been published before.

Tony Kenny’s “Christmastime in Ireland”

VOCALIST Tony Kenny will be performing his holiday show “Christmastime in Ireland” at the Community Theatre, 100 South Street, Morristown, New Jersey at 8 p.m. The duo of laughter and song “Mac & O,” comedian Carl Persse and the Dublin City Dancers will also join Tony Kenny. Ticket prices are $32, $30 and $29 and can be purchased by calling the Irish American Cultural Institute at 973-605-1991. This inspirational, family show takes the audience on a journey to the Emerald Isle at Christmas. A native of Dublin, Kenny began his musical career as the star of the internationally acclaimed stage musicals, Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He then joined the cast of the world famous Jurys Irish Cabaret in Dublin.
