A Bonfire of the Vanities

THERE was only one story here that mattered over the past week, one that filled pages of the newspapers and simultaneously fascinated and disgusted the nation. And no, it wasn’t the bizarre spectacle of Gerry Adams declaring that he was flabbergasted – flabbergasted! – that Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Bertie Ahern would say that he thought that at some stage Gerry was probably in the IRA.
