Pierce Shares Green Ideas
January 16, 2008
By Debbie McGoldrick
PIERCE Brosnan is a true Irishman at heart. Witness next month’s issue of Bon Appetit magazine, where the Co. Meath native lets us know all about his two favorite foods – spuds and soda bread.
“Potatoes — baked, mashed, roasted and boiled, or fried with cold sliced tomatoes. I could eat them every night of the week. I can’t live without a good potato,” Brosnan reports. “And Irish soda bread, hot from the oven with lashings of butter.” Mmm, mmm, good!
Pierce also likes to treat his family to the following on a Sunday morning: “Crepes with Meyer lemon juice and raw brown sugar on Sunday mornings.” (Mmm . . . not so good!)
Though he likes to indulge in the kitchen, Pierce is an environmentalist at heart, and offered readers tips on how to keep a green kitchen.
“Compost scraps — from banana peels to coffee grounds — and green waste,” he advises. “Purchase a turntable composter and start a green waste pile that can fortify your garden naturally. Purchase all-natural organic cleansers, recycled paper products, organic cotton and non GM (genetically modified organism) food products.”
That’s all well and good, but Pierce has a bit of a problem with our planet’s most natural resource – water. An elderly neighbor of his in Hawaii is taking him to the Hawaiian Supreme Court because, she claims, Pierce is stealing her H20.
Brosnan maintains a home in our 50th state, the only one surrounded by water on all sides. His neighbor, a 77-year-old Hawaiian farmer named Cathy Young, claims his estate is diverting water from her property, and that Brosnan has failed to replace a ditch, as was required in a previous ruling.
“Pierce Brosnan stole my water. Because he’s a millionaire movie star, he thought he could just move in and steal my water,” says an irate Young. “He’s even ignored a court ruling for him to put in a new ditch to restore the water supply to my farm.”
Hogwash, says Brosnan’s rep. “Pierce has not been ordered to restore a ditch,” he said. “A judge found that water goes through five different properties between Pierce’s property and Cathy Young’s property and that it’s not Pierce’s problem.”
In other Pierce news, the trailer for one of the hoped-for big summer movie hits, Mamma Mia, has hit theaters, and it looks like a blast. Pierce co-stars with Meryl Streep, and you can get a sneak peek at www.mammamiamovie.com.
“It is always a shock to see the work for the first time, even if it is in one-second shots. I hope the pure joy we felt while making the movie shines through,” Pierce says of the clip.
For those who can’t wait until summer to see Pierce in action, he has another film opening in March. Married Life, which also stars Rachel McAdams, Patricia Clarkson and Chris Cooper, opens on March 7.
