| Scully for Met
Starting
September 26, the Wall of Light series by artist Sean Scully will be
showcased in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Scully was born in Dublin
in 1945 but grew up in London, where he learned graphic design as an
apprentice in a printing shop.
After studying painting in college, Scully was inspired by the work
of Mark Rothko and Bridget Riley, which was the start of his abstract
work. He also found inspiration in the bright light he found when he
visited Morocco. In 1975, he won a fellowship at Harvard University, and
later moved to New York City, where he became an American citizen in
1983. Featured at the Metropolitan are more than 50 paintings, which
include some of his most recent work, about 20 large-scale paintings
inspired by his travels to Mexico.
While Scully has been featured in exhibits around the world, this is
his first major solo museum exhibition in New York. The exhibit will run
through January 14, 2007.
