The “Fighting Irish” as Art

An exhibit at the Irish Arts Center in New York entitled “Fighting Irishmen: A Celebration of the Celtic Warrior” (through Nov. 30) offers a rare opportunity to see memorabilia from a time when the Irish dominated the boxing world.

Boxing fans and other visitors may view John L. Sullivan’s fur coat, Jack Dempsey’s custom-made blazer, photos from the archives of Sports Illustrated, Charlie Nash’s Irish Olympic jersey and much more.

In related events, the center hosts four special evenings with films and lectures by sportswriters, authors and journalists. The series’ knockout punch on November 15 features film, commentary and anecdotal conversation moderated by curator James J. Houlihan in a program titled “Round 4: Irish Champs, Contenders and Pretenders” at the Fordham-Lincoln Center. Gerry Cooney, Mikey Ward and Arturo Gatti will be on hand.

Additional information can be found on the Irish Arts Center website at www.irishartscenter.org.
