Shane and Johnny in Libertine

Libertine, based on John Wilmot, the 17th century Earl of Rochester who was a poet, courtier and notorious rake, stars Depp, John Malkovich and Samantha Morton. MacGowan who made a name from himself as the lead singer of The Pogues, and whose substance abuse has been well-documented by admirers and detractors alike, has the part of a ballad singer.

Meanwhile MacGowan’s father, Maurice, is leading the battle to have Shane’s manager, Joey Cashman, removed, citing mismanagement. Speaking to Irish America, he said: “The fans are teed off. They want Shane to do the good work that he is capable of, which he is not doing now. His career is going down the drain and there’s financial mismanagement and gig mismanagement.” To date, some 2,000 fans have signed the petition on Shane’s web site www.shanemacgowan.com.
