Intel Corporation
As President and
CEO of Intel Corp., Craig Barrett is in charge of the world’s largest
producer of microprocessors. He began working at Intel in 1974 as a technology
development manager and began his work at the upper echelons of the corporation
in 1984 as a vice president, and was elected to the board of directors
in 1992.
Before joining Intel, Barrett was immersed in the world of academia
as an associate professor at Stanford University, where he received his
B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in materials science. He was a Fulbright Fellow
at the Danish Technical University in 1972 and a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow
at the National Physical Laboratory in England from 1964 to 1965. Barrett
is co-chairman of the Business Coalition in Excellence in Education and
Chairman of the Computer Systems Policy Project. He recently was elected
chair of the National Academy of Engineering, and sits on the boards of
the U.S. Semiconductor Industry Association and the National Forest Foundation.
Brian Burns
BF Enterprises, Inc.
With roots in County
Kerry and a strong connection back to Ireland, Brian Burns is chairman
and president of BF Enterprises, Inc., a publicly-owned real estate and
development company. He was the driving force behind some 40 corporate
mergers and is a nationally regarded business executive. Previously, he
served as the Chairman to the Executive Committee at the Coca-Cola Bottling
Company of New York. Burns also sits on the Taoiseach’s Economic
Advisory Board.
He is the founder and principal benefactor of the John J. Burns Library
of Rare Books, named after his father, at Boston College. The library
houses more than 150,000 rare volumes – the largest archive of rare
books in the U.S., with the largest collection of Irish research materials.
He was also a principal benefactor of the Irish Famine Memorial in Cambridge,
Massachusetts. Burns is a director of The American Ireland Fund and serves
on the Trinity College Foundation Board in Dublin.
Chase Carey
DirecTV
As President and CEO
of DirecTV, Chase Carey is in charge of operations and the overall strategic
direction of the company in the United States and South America. DirecTV’s
Board of Directors elected Carey to the position in December 2003 after
he worked for News Corp. and Sky Global Networks until 2002 where he served
as co-chief operating officer and later CEO.
Carey worked as a senior executive at News Corp. since 1988, notably with
its subsidiary Fox Entertainment and was instrumental in the growth of
Fox Television Stations from seven to its current 35 affiliates,
which draw nearly 300 million subscribers. Prior to his tenure with Fox
and News Corp. Carey spent six years in senior capacities with Columbia
Pictures.
He is currently a trustee of Colgate University, where he did his undergraduate
work. Carey also graduated from the Harvard Business School. Carey is
a third-generation Irish-American and has been to Ireland six times during
his travels.
Michael J. Callahan
Yahoo!
In September
2003, Michael J. Callahan was appointed Senior Vice President, General
Counsel, and Secretary of Yahoo! after spending time as Deputy General
Counsel and Assistant Secretary. He is in charge of the worldwide legal
affairs and public policy for Yahoo! Callahan began working with the company
in 1999.
Prior to Yahoo! Callahan was with Electronics for Imagine, Inc. where
he was heavily involved with overall business development. He was also
associated with the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher &
Flom LLP, where he put his efforts towards business mergers.
Callahan received his law degree from the University of Connecticut after
attaining a B.S. in International Affairs and Arab Studies from Georgetown
University. For the past two years, while working at Yahoo! Callahan has
distinguished himself as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California. He
is a third-generation Irish-American with ties to Cork on his father’s
side. Callahan is married and has two children.
Mark Cleary
Clementina-Clemco Holdings, Inc.
Mark Cleary is the
President of Clementina-Clemco Holdings, Inc., a family held company based
in San Francisco. The company was founded in 1941 in order to supply construction
equipment for the post World War II building boom. In the late 1940s the
company expanded by creating a manufacturing subsidiary and in the 50s
it broke into the international market. In 1991 the company sold its rental
operations and took up the ownership and management of golf courses. Celtic
Golf Management is the newest addition to the Clemco family. It currently
owns two golf courses in Northern California.
Cleary is of Irish descent from both his father and mother and knows more
about his heritage from his mother’s family. His mother’s
parents came from counties Cork and Longford and he has kept in touch
with his mother’s family in Ireland, visiting them on a number of
occasions. Cleary is a supporter of both The American Ireland Fund and
“Crossroads” from his home in San Francisco. He is married
with one son, Sean.
Michelle Finneran Dennedy
Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Michelle
Dennedy is Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) for Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Founded in February 1982, Sun employs 35,000 people worldwide with revenues
of $11.4 billion for 2003 and is ranked 153 on the Fortune 500 list.
As CPO, Dennedy is responsible for continuing to develop and implement
Sun’s data privacy policies and practices, working across Sun’s
business groups to drive the company’s continued data privacy excellence.
She works with Sun’s product development teams and partners to deliver
privacy enabling products and services. Dennedy joined Sun in 2000 as
a member of the marketing and brands legal team, where she was responsible
for a variety of legal issues including intellectual property, unfair
competition, e-commerce and data privacy. She co-founded Sun’s Privacy
Council, an organization dedicated to promoting a cohesive privacy practice
throughout the company.
Dennedy received her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in 1996,
and previously served as a litigator in both New York and Palo Alto.
Brian Farrell
THQ Inc.
Brian
Farrell is the president and CEO of THQ, one of the fastest-growing interactive
software and video game companies in the world. Under Farrell’s
guidance, THQ reported record-breaking numbers with $757 million in revenues.
He has held his current position since 1995 and during his tenure the
company has had a ten year compound annual revenue growth rate of 36 percent
while expanding the company to serve over 75 countries.
Farrell has led THQ into collaboration with huge mass-market gaming genres
including Disney/Pixar, Nickelodeon, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)
and Scooby Doo. Farrell joined THQ in 1991 as vice president and chief
financial officer. Prior to his time with THQ, he served as
the vice president and chief financial officer at Hotel Investors
Trust.
Farrell received his B.A. from Stanford University and went on to attain
his MB.A. from UCLA. Farrell is a second-generation Irish-American with
roots in Longford. He is married with three children and lives in Augora
Hills in California.
Patrick J. Gallagher
Giants Enterprises
Entering his
29th year with Giants Enterprises, a wholly owned subsidiary of the San
Francisco Giants baseball team, Patrick Gallagher has risen in the ranks
from marketing director to president.
Before joining the Giants organization, he was an executive at Marine World/Africa
USA and Sea World theme parks. With the Giants, Gallagher played a large
role in the design and naming rights of the new stadium, SBC tadium. Pacific
Bell was the original partner. He now develops other uses for the stadium
besides baseball, such as soccer matches and concerts. Under his leadership,
the Giants have received numerous accolades, including the MLB Marketing
Excellence award.
Gallagher is a past president for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the
Peninsula area. He also sits on the executive committees of the San Francisco
Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and Special Olympics of Northern
California. A second-generation Irish-American, Gallagher traces his roots
to counties Donegal and Clare. He and his wife Joan live in Palo Alto
with their two children.
Jon Kevin Folan
Gallatin Capital Partners
With over 30 years in the securities industry, Jon Folan is a partner
with Gallatin Capital Partners, a money management company in San Francisco
that adheres to a risk-averse investment philosophy seeking capital appreciation
within the context of preserving clients’ assets. Prior to this
position, Folan was senior managing director with Bear, Stearns &
Co., in San Francisco. Folan joined Bear Stearns from Prudential Volpe
Technology Group where he was a managing director and group head of corporate
and venture services.
Folan has served on boards including the National Handicapped Sports
Board, The American Ireland Fund and is a founding member of The Parents’
Board at The University of California at Berkeley. Folan received the
Award for Distinguished Leadership from The American Ireland Fund this
year. A second-generation Irish-American with roots in counties Galway,
Cork and Kerry, Folan was born in San Francisco and visits Ireland frequently.
He and his wife Gail have been married for 35 years and have four daughters.
John Hartnett
Palm, Inc.
As
senior vice president John Hartnett is responsible for Palm, Inc.’s
(formerly palmOne) sales and customer support for all channels, including
retail, distribution, carrier, eCommerce, and Palm’s retail stores.
Prior to this position, he was executive VP of worldwide operations, service,
support and eCommerce at Handspring Inc. In October 2003, Palm acquired
Handspring, Inc. and the new company was named palmOne. Hartnett was a
member of the merger leadership team, and Palm is estimating this year
it will have revenues of $1.21 billion. The company recently opened its
first European engineering center in Dublin.
Hartnett earned a marketing degree through the Marketing Institute of
Ireland, a post-graduate diploma in finance through the Association
of Chartered Accountants (ACCA) and completed the executive management
program at Stanford University. A native of Limerick, Hartnett is also
a member of The American Ireland Fund and is keynote speaker at the West
Coast luncheon this year. He is married with three children and resides
in Los Gatos, California.
